The Healing I Didn’t Know I Needed
The last time we spoke, we talked about the people whom the Lord places in your life in your time of need, and each of them played a special role in my wife’s healing.
The process of healing is not one which is short, so that process is ongoing. She still needs to see our doctor and have maintenance done on her foot. He has become a person whom we trust in this process, and we are probably always going to be connected. Healing doesn’t happen overnight and is not a quick process.
As the final round of skin grafts were successful and she finally was able to see progress in her wound care, the natural progression led to her learning to walk again. At first, we started with very little. Then, with a walker, she was able to walk further and further. Eventually, she was able to use a cane for a short time, until she was able to walk without it.
There were milestones hit every day. An hour of no need for a wheelchair.
“I made it to lunch today!”
Each day, with effort, perseverance, and sometimes pain, she gained more strength and ability to walk. Once able to walk short distances, we started shopping again. Something she loves to do, but had not been able to do for so long. It was short trips, but shopping nonetheless.
She pushed so hard to get moving again. Her strength and determination was inspiring. She pushed to the point where she could go for walks.
Longer and longer each day.
With that, we made the decision to get healthy. We knew that through all this trauma, we had added unneeded pounds. We started to diet and walk each night together. Me holding her back more than anything, always worried about how much she was doing. In total, to date, she and I have lost a total of 155 pounds and continue to work towards our goals.
I am so proud of the work that she has put in.
What I didn’t know is that there was more healing to do. It wasn’t her this time. What I didn’t know was that when she was finally doing so well and didn’t need me as much, it was I who would need the Lord’s healing.
It was as though, even as things were beginning to look up, the heaviness of the past months came crashing down.
It is time to Find Me again.
Talk again soon.
